Speaker A:

Your perspective dictates your future.

Speaker A:

On today's episode, we're going to go over the power perspective and how it shapes who you are, how you handle situations and how you look at certain things.

Speaker A:

Justin, is there a time that you look back at a situation or you look back at a scenario and you wish you would have changed your perspective on that certain matter or change your perspective on what happened during that time?

Justin:

Yes, there have been plenty of situations where I've reflected on, not necessarily regret, but yeah.

Justin:

Where I could have potentially handled it differently or had a different perspective on the situation.

Justin:

My perspective during that time is why I have the perspective that I do now.

Justin:

I can say myself.

Justin:

My perspective has shaped my identity, especially as I've gotten older and matured more, both professionally and personally.

Justin:

But your perspective is everything.

Justin:

I mean, your perspective, like I mentioned, is your identity, which is your.

Justin:

That tells your thoughts, your behaviors and your emotions how you react to certain situations.

Justin:

So you can get rapid fire issues throughout the entire day, but your perspective on those incoming issues.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Says a lot about who you are as a person.

Speaker A:

Yeah, there's a.

Speaker A:

There's a quote from one of my former baseball coaches.

Speaker A:

His name is Nick Mingione.

Speaker A:

He's the head coach at uk.

Speaker A:

He says either change your situation or change the way you look at it.

Speaker A:

And I think there's a ton of value in that where, you know, it's not always going to be easygoing and it's not always going to be best case scenario in our day to day lives and we deal with it all the time.

Speaker A:

But how do we look at it and how do we position ourselves to, you know, look at the better half of that and move forward?

Justin:

It's all about moving forward and improving.

Justin:

The issue that a lot of people have or the show that a lot of people have is that they can't get out of their own way and change their perspective for the better.

Justin:

I love that your coach said that.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Because it's been very cliche.

Justin:

But everyone's heard the same for the most part of your product of your environment.

Justin:

Sure you are in certain situations because of the environment you're putting yourselves in.

Justin:

Whether that's business, whether that's, you know, relationships, whether that's your social circle, you're a product of your environment.

Justin:

So if certain things happen, whether that's good or bad, your perspective on those things is a result because you put yourself in that situation.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Where do you think that comes from?

Speaker A:

Do you think that comes from childhood or from friends or peers or Colleagues.

Speaker A:

Where does that come from?

Speaker A:

From, like, the ability to shape your perspective.

Justin:

Yeah, it evolves.

Justin:

I mean, it absolutely starts in childhood and.

Justin:

And your parenting or your experience growing up with your parents and.

Justin:

And how they've molded your perspective.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Because, for example, when I grew up with it.

Justin:

Divorced parents.

Speaker A:

Sure.

Justin:

You know, I was two when they divorced.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

So my perspective on when I would go to my friend's house and sit down and have dinner with them and everyone sitting at the same table.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Was.

Justin:

Oh, this is what it might supposed to be like.

Justin:

Like, why is everyone sitting down?

Justin:

Why is the dad here?

Justin:

Like, why is the mom and dad.

Justin:

Why are they, like, flirting at the same table?

Justin:

Yeah.

Justin:

So, like.

Justin:

So, like.

Justin:

But that changed your perspective as you get older.

Justin:

Because I wanted a family.

Justin:

I didn't see anything wrong with that.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

You know, I'm grateful for my family, but I wanted a family to sit down with when I was older, as I aged, and as my perspective changed.

Justin:

So, yeah, I think it starts in childhood and then, you know, your values are driven into you from your parents.

Justin:

Sure.

Justin:

But your values also change when it comes to perspective.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

What type of perspective, either business or personal, what type of perspective are you trying to instill in your kids or your employees?

Speaker A:

Yeah, I think this is something that, you know, I think we talked about it before, and I think the colors might have changed, but it's the ability to in any scenario.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Business, personal, family, inner circle, whatever you want to call that.

Speaker A:

You mentioned this before with, you know, the colors of cars.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And we look at it especially.

Speaker A:

This is one thing that we do in our family a lot with our kids is we focus on the white cars.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And what that means is, okay, when you're going down the street and if you intentionally focus on the good things or the white cars, you're able to see the good in almost everything.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

There are some scenarios out there that.

Speaker A:

That aren't great and that's going to happen.

Speaker A:

But instead of focusing on the black car.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

We're focusing on the white car and we're focusing on the good in every scenario.

Speaker A:

Our kids come home often and they might have had somebody that didn't treat them well at school, and we have to hear about and how we combat that and how do we overcome or even teach them?

Speaker A:

Okay, well, what did they say?

Speaker A:

Or what.

Speaker A:

What do you think they meant when they said that?

Speaker A:

There's a lot of validity in the power perspective.

Speaker A:

And how do you reframe your mind to think a certain way?

Justin:

Yeah.

Justin:

And you talk about reframing your mind and kind of creating those calluses or developing your mindset so that when you are in those situations, you're reacting the way you want to react as opposed to, you know, negatively and going down, you know, a different direction.

Justin:

So professionally, you talk about perspective and how it relates to your identity, but as a sales rep, when you're going to calls, and we talked about childhood already, but when you go into calls and let's say you fail a ton of times growing up and maybe got cut from the sports team, so let your parents down a lot because you're a troublemaker, whatever that may be, your belief system and your perspective on sales might be.

Justin:

I'm going to fail.

Speaker A:

Right.

Justin:

I'm going to go to work, I'm going to fail today.

Justin:

People are going to hang up the phone on me.

Justin:

Because that's your identity, that's your perspective, that's your belief system.

Justin:

If you can change that perspective and understand what happened in the past is not who you are right now, but you need to go through that adversity to get where you are and know that you can change your perspective.

Justin:

Going into work every single day thinking, I am the best damn sales rep.

Justin:

Yeah.

Justin:

That this office has and I'm going to dominate.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

That perspective and that change in and of itself will set you up for more success and more wins throughout the day.

Speaker A:

Yeah, you're absolutely right.

Speaker A:

And that doesn't get talked about enough in society today because we are focused on the negative.

Speaker A:

We do see negative new cells.

Speaker A:

And that's something that, you know, even with our company and our families, those are things that we want to make sure that we're.

Speaker A:

We're doing to make sure that we are reframing and having.

Speaker A:

Looking at the white cars.

Speaker A:

There's a book that I read previously, it's by.

Speaker A:

Don't make fun of me.

Speaker A:

But it's, it's a parenting book by Becky Kennedy and she's like the biggest thing on social media right now.

Speaker A:

Like, she's big on like gentle parenting.

Speaker A:

And I still.

Justin:

I'm kind of gentle.

Speaker A:

You're very gentle.

Speaker A:

Hold on a second.

Speaker A:

I'm like, at odds with like, Jess and I kind of butt head sometimes on the gentle parenting scenario.

Speaker A:

In that instance, you know, she has a chapter in her book called mgi.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And I love this piece because it's most generous interpretation.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

It's like telling you as a parent, okay, my child, I just cooked them a beautiful breakfast with toast and eggs and fruit and everything like that.

Speaker A:

And they get pissed off and they throw the plate on the floor.

Speaker A:

And with the mgi, the most generous interpretation, how do we take that?

Speaker A:

Maybe they had a bad night of sleep, maybe they had something happen to them that we don't know.

Speaker A:

And it's not necessarily the breakfast that we cooked.

Speaker A:

And I think it's more along the lines of, okay, how do we take this in the most generous interpretation of our child?

Speaker A:

Also, I think you can relate to business.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

I think some things get said or things get done and okay, maybe that person didn't mean it this way.

Speaker A:

How do I take it in the most generous interpretation of what they meant.

Justin:

That perspective.

Justin:

I love that I haven't heard that.

Justin:

I'm somewhat firm in my parenting credit to Jess.

Justin:

Yeah, yeah.

Justin:

I to, I guess soften up a lot.

Speaker A:

I'm not on that boat yet.

Justin:

But, but, but even that.

Justin:

Brian, you talk about understanding why your kids reacted the way they did or why an employee reacted the way they did.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

It all boils down to perspective.

Speaker A:

Sure.

Justin:

And when you can be more present in those types of situations and think through as opposed to just being reactionary, your perspective changes and you become better.

Justin:

And you can help that individual or your kid or the employee become better by understanding why they reacted the way they did or why they have a perspective on a certain situation.

Justin:

So when you can take a step back, really think about what your perspective is on a certain situation, there is so much opportunity to improve and improve others around you.

Justin:

Your story is awesome about the mgi.

Justin:

It reminds me of the story that, you know, the specialist.

Justin:

We had a specialist come in.

Justin:

We do monthly event for our employees where we have a guest speaker or we'll present on a specific topic.

Justin:

It's all focused on mental wellness.

Justin:

The specialist, her focus is workplace wellness.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

A lot of it has to do with diet, exercise, stress, being in a high stress environment.

Justin:

We are dealing with issues nonstop.

Speaker A:

Correct.

Justin:

And we've said this before and we stress it often, but issues.

Justin:

And your perspective on issues is oftentimes negative.

Justin:

If I come to you and I say, brian, I have an issue.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

It's immediately negative because 80% of our thoughts are negative.

Speaker A:

Sure.

Justin:

But if you change your perspective on an issue, let's use logistics.

Justin:

For example, a truck breaks down or a truck is late to a delivery, is that necessarily an issue?

Justin:

Yeah, maybe, probably.

Justin:

But is it also an opportunity to build a stronger relationship with your client or build a stronger relationship with a coworker and change your perspective for it to be positive?

Justin:

So if you Just swap issue with the word opportunity.

Justin:

Your whole perspective changes and your thought process changes on certain situations.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, Justin, I love that, man.

Speaker A:

I think so for those listening today, right.

Speaker A:

They might say, okay, Justin, Okay, Brian.

Speaker A:

I'm supposed to just sit here and flip a switch and change my perspective.

Speaker A:

And that's just.

Speaker A:

I'm just supposed to do it where I might have $1,000 in my account.

Speaker A:

My girlfriend just broke up with me or my wife just divorced me.

Speaker A:

My kids that are 18 and 20 years old, they don't talk to me anymore.

Speaker A:

What do I do?

Speaker A:

That man.

Justin:

If you're feeling like you've hit rock bottom and you don't have an out, life is against you.

Justin:

It's just getting poured on your shoulders.

Justin:

Realize that majority of people have been in the same shoes.

Justin:

And I told a story early on.

Justin:

It was one of our first episodes.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

I asked my wife to leave me.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

It's because I lost my self worth.

Justin:

I felt like I had no value.

Justin:

Yeah.

Justin:

I got fired.

Justin:

I had another kid on the way.

Justin:

We had nowhere to move in Cincinnati.

Justin:

We were stuck in Austin.

Justin:

Tay like majority of people have been there.

Speaker A:

Sure.

Justin:

But there's nothing that you are going to do right now to change what happened in the past.

Justin:

Right.

Justin:

The only thing you have is right now and your future.

Justin:

So you have to look at that as again an opportunity to understand where you can learn what did you do wrong?

Justin:

How can you improve?

Justin:

What is your perspective like if that situation were to happen again because you're changing your thought process, your belief system and your identity as you face more and more adversity is an opportunity for you to improve as an individual.

Justin:

So let's say you have $1,000 in your bank account.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Well, that's better than zero.

Justin:

Or let's say your girlfriend left you.

Speaker A:

Sure.

Justin:

Why did she leave you?

Justin:

Was it a, you know, a hostile relationship?

Justin:

Was she a good fit for you?

Justin:

Was.

Justin:

Were you a good fit for like, you got to understand I have a different perspective.

Justin:

Maybe it's opportunity for you to focus on yourself.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Look in the.

Justin:

Maybe you guys are fighting a lot.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

Now you have more time yourself and you can focus on personal development and becoming a better you.

Justin:

So everything can be an opportunity if you train your mind to think that way.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Justin:

But you're not down and out until you're dead.

Speaker A:

Right.

Justin:

You have a lot of life to live and every single day is an opportunity for you to improve your perspective and improve your identity.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

No, I love it, man.

Speaker A:

And I think that you know, going over a lot of these tactics and strategies to help that are huge.

Speaker A:

I do want to invite those people who are listening today.

Speaker A:

Please, you know, comment, please ask any questions that you need to on the show.

Speaker A:

We'd love to hear from you.

Speaker A:

We'd love to understand where you're coming from or message us directly to see if we can help in any way get you back on that right track.

Justin:

You know, my inner circle, I expect them to be my biggest fans.

Justin:

I expect them to believe in me and vice versa.

Justin:

I expect them to hold me accountable.

Justin:

I expect them to hear me out or give me advice when I need it.

Justin:

But your inner circle is truly your most trusted network of friends, family, you know, significant others.
